Gallup’s longest-running measure of abortion views, established in 1975, asks Americans if abortion should be legal in all circumstances, legal only under certain circumstances, or illegal in all circumstances” and that question finds only 20% of respondents who want to fully criminalize abortion.
25% of respondents say abortion should be legal in all circumstances, and 52% say abortion should be legal in some circumstances, meaning 77% of USians still favor keeping abortion legal in some form.
That is overwhelming support for legal abortion, which a headline like “only 41% are pro-choice!” doesn’t indicate at all.
Conservative strategists are extremely good at demonizing language, and they’ve successfully turned “pro-choice” toxic in much the same way they did “liberal.” But they haven’t successfully made support for legal abortion unpopular.
Do they really believe that abortion is murder? (a handy dandy chart, courtesy of Alas, A Blog!)
Almost none of their policies make sense if they really see no difference between the death of a fetus and the death of a four-year-old. However, nearly all their policies make sense if they’re seeking to make sure that women who have sex “face the consequences.” are punished. After years of seeing this pattern repeated again and again, it’s difficult to take them at their word.

lavendernladybugs replied to your post: Do you think that homosexuals should have to live their entire lives either pretending to be straight (which would cause them undue amounts of psychological harm) or else forcing themselves to be celibate, as though…
I’m guessing you’ve never heard of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs? Because in that hierarchy, sex is listed along with food, shelter, sleep, and breathing in “physiological needs” (aka our most basic needs). “Love and belonging,” which includes sexual intimacy and romance, is the third lowest rung on the hierarchy. Yes, some people do not need intimacy or romance to have a fulfilling life, and I’m not saying that it’s impossible to have a fulfilling life without sexual intimacy. BUT MOST PEOPLE DO NEED SEX AND INTIMACY TO LIVE HEALTHY LIVES. Including the majority of LGBTQ individuals.
If an LGBTQ person CHOOSES to be celibate or to not pursue romantic relationships for whatever reason, more power to them. But FORCING them to be celibate IS cruel and damaging.

If you believe that contraception is morally wrong…
…can you at least then NOT USE IT YOURSELF? Yes, I seriously met someone who believed that using contraception was wrong, but also actually used it.
Because she “didn’t want to become like her mother,” who I guess had children at a young age.
Can someone please explain how this makes ANY SENSE AT ALL?!
We were discussing homosexuality because of an allusion to it in the book we were reading, and several boys made comments such as, “That’s disgusting.” We got into the debate and eventually a boy admitted that he was terrified/disgusted when he was once sharing a taxi and the other male passenger made a pass at him.The lightbulb went off. “Oh,” I said. “I get it. See, you are afraid, because for the first time in your life you have found yourself a victim of unwanted sexual advances by someone who has the physical ability to use force against you.” The boy nodded and shuddered visibly.“But,” I continued. “As a woman, you learn to live with that from the time you are fourteen, and it never stops. We live with that fear every day of our lives. Every man walking through the parking garage the same time you are is either just a harmless stranger or a potential rapist. Every time.”The girls in the room nodded, agreeing. The boys seemed genuinely shocked. “So think about that the next time you hit on a girl. Maybe, like you in the taxi, she doesn’t actually want you to.
